How to Photograph Great Senior Pictures

Senior pictures are a very traditional feature of the graduation of thousands of young adults across the world. These photos will be kept for many years to come, will be framed by parents and grandparents and kept as a keepsake by the people whom feature in the pictures themselves. It is important that the photographs are taken well, as they mark a great memory in so many young adult’s pasts.

Hobbies and Interests – If the student was involved in a particular sport or class at school that they excelled in, show this in the photograph. The captain of the football team could be kitted up in his uniform and stood still near either to the touchline, or in action.

Show Their Personality – It is very traditional to have a background of books and a straight-faced student sat in front of them for their senior photograph. This does not have to be the case anymore and expression and personality can be brought into the picture. If they are outgoing, show them laughing, if they have many friends, you can feature them with their closest of friends in a more natural shot.

Casual is best – It is not often that you will find a young teenager who wears a suit every day, so why have them in one for their senior shot? It makes more sense for them to be comfortable and in their own casual clothes. This is firstly because they will look more themselves, but they will also be more relaxed and more likely to produce a winning photograph that the family will be proud of.

Wedding Photography – 5 tips for Amateur Wedding Photographers Starting Out

Couples whom are planning to wed will always choose their wedding photographer very carefully and will spend great time looking at photographers’ portfolios and resumes before making a final decision. However, as someone new into the world of wedding photography, you will have no real experience and it might be hard to start out. Here are some tips on how to get your foot into the door.

  1. Mirror a Professional – Ask someone who already shoots weddings for a living if you can shadow them for a day without a camera, unpaid of course. From this day out you will learn many things such as how to be discreet and how to spot those special shots that the couple will treasure.
  2. The next time, ask this photographer or another if you can shadow them with a camera and take some test shots. The happy couple will not use yours but the professional might be able to give you some hints and tips on how to improve your shots.
  3. Ask a couple who are planning to marry if you mind taking shots beside the photographer that they have already booked. You would do this free of charge but this way, you will be taking serious shots and you can give the couple the option to buy any of your pictures at a reduced rate, as you are still learning.
  4. Once your confidence levels have increased and you have done the above a few times, ask an engaged couple if you can be their only photographer. You will already have some sample photos to show them and as you will not be taking a fee for the day, they will also benefit. The only money that you will make here is from any prints that they decide to purchase for themselves afterwards.
  5. The final step is to go it entirely alone. Over the previous months where you have practiced and learned the trade, you will have built up a wedding photography portfolio. You can now begin to use this to entice new customers into hiring you for their future weddings. Good luck!

How to take great Group Shots

Group photographs are an important type of photography to master, as you will see request popping up for them more often than you would realise. Aside from the usual family portraits that are most commonly seen, sporting teams, friends’ nights out, wedding parties and school celebrations are other events, which will require you to shoot groups of people at the same time.

Think about Location – If you are shooting a child’s baseball event, have the time stood on the pitch all together, rather than against a fence or wall. Make the backdrop appropriate to the occasion. The same goes for a wedding, have the wedding party stood near to the church or against a backdrop of flower arrangements.

Eyes open please – Mastering how to shoot a group of people all with their eyes open at the same time can be a very difficult task indeed, and more so if you are photographing children. A trick to avoiding this is to either countdown 3, 2, 1 too quickly to catch them off-hand, or take a double-shot, immediately after each other. It is likely that at least one of them will result in everyone all having their eyes open at the same time.

Close-Ups – Photography shot very close to the group will allow you to focus more on the people than the background, and also to see more expression on their faces. This is important and can often make a picture special.

Keep Light Behind – When shooting outdoors in the summer, have the sun behind them. If it is in front of them, all of the models will be squinting from the light and a well put together and posed shot could be ruined.

Have fun with it – Rather than posing your models, catch them off guard. When groups of friends are all together, concentration can often lapse and fits of laughter will ensue. Use this to your advantage and snap them just as they release their smiles to one another and are looking away from the camera. This could see the result of a fantastically natural and fun shot at the end of it.
